What Drives You? The Moon Placement in Your Human Design

Gotta love the moon! As a Cancer sun and rising, I have a very soft spot for the moon and all the wisdom it holds. While not technically a planet in its own right, the moon has a powerful influence on us all. If you have noticed the subtle shifts in people’s behavior around a full moon – you can see how it’s pulling strings behind the scenes. The moon represents the feminine archetypal energy. It is loving, nurturing, and goes through a steady process of death and birth along each cycle. The moon is also associated with our emotions and calls us to be receptive to our gifts and true purpose. It’s steadily poking us and pushing us forward – sometimes whether we like it or not.

In your Human Design chart, the moon represents what is really driving you. On a much more subtle level than your life theme or profile, the moon indicates that little emotional pulse that has the potential to propel you forward or completely throw you off track if you’re not mindful of it. The moon represents our subconscious motivations and illuminates our emotional world. Knowing your moon placement can help you understand what’s important to you - and help you navigate through the emotional ups and downs (which I would wager can be very instructive when working with an emotional authority).

How I Use My Moon Placement

My moon placements are in Gate 11, Ideas, and Gate 59, Seduction. Both of these gates have to do with creativity. Ideas bring a zest for having multiple ideas at any given time that fuels possibilities and inspiration where seduction, while sounding really cheeky, is about the ability to emit ideas and desires to the right people at the right time and place to radiate my intention outward.

This combo is all about tapping into the creativity of the sacral center and following the things that light me up — while also being able to explore possibilities and what could be. I love this energy because it shows up in so many different facets of my life. I tend to really be driven by opportunities and people that push me to explore new things and ideas — creating as much as I want at any given time. I don’t like to be pigeon-holed into one thing or being around people who make me feel limited in any way. I’m a dreamer at heart who wants just wants to play with the energy of life. Knowing this really has helped me tap into this feeling of expansiveness and seek out people and places where it is supported and encouraged.

Now, this may seem like an easy-breezy path, but I needed to knock into a lot of people and situations that made me feel extremely constricted before I could even see this. It’s one thing to know that you’re driven by creative ideas and are good at conveying concepts in a manner that reels people in – it’s another to learn how the resistance shows up in your own body when that is being limited or hindered in some way. For me, it’s frustration and anxiety that comes from not being able to see where my emotions (usually anger and some crying) are pulling me. “Why can’t I just learn to like doing things this way or be like that?” LOL. Now I can look back and see how ridiculous my attempts to conform to a different way of being were – and are – but in the moment it doesn’t feel like that.

Getting out of these emotional ruts is a process of discovering how to turn the information coming from the emotional waves into something that helps you to explain where anxiety or stress come from so you can eventually see the doorway out. This is where the moon placement can be incredibly instructive.

Questions to Explore with Your Moon Placement

When you first start looking at your moon gates, consider the fact that you may be a bit resistant to what the information is telling you – this is, after all, tied to your emotional world. Learning to work with your emotions and not against them is a really important step in finding what alignment means for you.

So, if you come to your moon placements and the gates feel a little like you’re being dragged, ask yourself the following:

  1. How is this information agitating me? What feelings is it bringing up?

  2. What do I need to make this feeling be empowering?

  3. What fears, worries, sadness do I need to let go of to see the high expression of this in my life?

Take this process one step at a time. Remember, the moon is about being receptive and dropping into a place where everything you need is already yours. Be gentle with yourself, move as the moon does in subtle phases until you are ready to start again.
